“VeryDarkMan to be released today” – Insider –

  • The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to release Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, after days of public outcry over his arrest.
  • A senior EFCC official confirmed that Otse, who remains in custody, has not been charged with any formal offenses.
  • VeryDarkMan was arrested on May 2 due to multiple petitions alleging cyberstalking and related offenses.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is expected to release popular social media personality Martins Vincent Otse, known online as VeryDarkMan, on Tuesday, following mounting public criticism over his recent arrest.

A top EFCC source, speaking anonymously to Vanguard on Monday, confirmed that although Otse is still being held, no official charges have been filed against him as of yet.

His arrest, which took place on Friday, May 2, stemmed from multiple complaints accusing him of cyberstalking and similar offenses. However, the move has triggered widespread backlash from Nigerians, many of whom believe the arrest is a direct threat to freedom of expression and an effort to suppress dissenting voices.

Public frustration intensified over the weekend, leading to a demonstration in Abuja on Monday. Protesters gathered in Wuse, holding signs like “Free VDM!” and “End Selective Justice!” as they called for his immediate release.

Insiders at the EFCC disclosed that while Otse is still under investigation, charges are currently being drafted and may be formally presented in court by Thursday.

Known for his outspoken views on politics, corruption, and societal challenges, VeryDarkMan has built a large following by openly criticizing public figures and institutions. His detention has drawn strong condemnation from several groups and individuals, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who labeled the arrest a ‘blatant abuse of power’

At the time of this report, the EFCC had not issued any official comment on the status of his case.
