Valencia have issued a formal demand for an “immediate rectification” from the producers of Vinícius Júnior’s new Netflix documentary.
The Spanish team claimed it presents a misleading and damaging account of the racist abuse the Real Madrid star suffered at the Mestalla in May 2023.
The documentary, produced by Brazilian firm Conspiração, highlights key moments in Vinícius’ career, with a strong focus on racism in football.
One segment revisits the May 21, 2023 incident, when Vinícius was subjected to racist abuse during a La Liga match at Mestalla, leading to a temporary suspension of the game.
Although three Valencia fans were convicted and sentenced for racist conduct, marking a precedent-setting legal outcome in Spain, the club contests the documentary’s portrayal of the abuse as widespread.
The film features subtitled footage suggesting chants of “mono” (monkey) came from the crowd.
Valencia insist the majority of supporters were chanting “tonto” (stupid), not a racial slur.
In a statement on Monday, Valencia said:
“In light of the injustice and falsehoods committed against Valencia CF fans, the Club has demanded in writing an immediate rectification from the documentary’s production company regarding the events at Mestalla, which do not correspond to reality… Valencia CF reserves the right to take legal action.”
