A tragic incident occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, as a male student reportedly lost his life after jumping from the balcony of his off-campus lodge.

The incident took place on Thursday evening, June 5, when the student allegedly consumed a substance known as “colos” before jumping from a three-story building near the university premises.

Eyewitnesses say they heard a loud thud and rushed to the scene, only to find the student lying unconscious in a pool of blood. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to a fellow student, the deceased was given the substance by another lodge resident. A video circulating online shows residents confronting the individual believed to have supplied the substance, accusing him of standing idly by while the tragic event unfolded. The man appeared dazed and unable to respond, reportedly also under the influence of the drug.

Authorities have since taken the alleged supplier said to be the victim’s roommate into custody. He is expected to be questioned further once he has fully recovered from the effects of the substance.

The incident has sparked concerns about the growing use of hard substances among students and raised calls for tighter control measures within student communities.
