The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has sparked widespread reactions after he described social media as a ‘terrorist organisation,’ urging Nigerian security agencies to take decisive action against its perceived threats.
The traditional ruler made the statement during a recent address, a video of which was shared by News Central.
In the video, the Sultan strongly criticised the role of social media in spreading misinformation and inciting unrest.
“What happened has happened. You cannot come and be doing social media because that is one terrorist organisation,” the Sultan said.
He further expressed concern over the ease with which individuals can fabricate and circulate false stories from the comfort of their homes, warning that such unchecked narratives can destabilise society.
“Social media is a terrorist organisation. What they do; somebody will sit down in his comfort zone and formulate stories, and you will discover that it is not true,” he added.
Reiterating his call for firm action, the Sultan urged security operatives to tackle what he described as the dangerous influence of social media.
“So, social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Security agencies must deal with this terrorist organisation called social media,” he stated.
