Abuja-based legal practitioner, Stan Alieke, has shed light on a troubling trend involving the misuse of Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and charity bank accounts for money laundering.
In a post shared on his Instagram page, Alieke explained that laundering illicit funds can be deceptively simple. He described a common tactic where a person transfers money to an unsuspecting recipient and later requests the funds be returned—either under the guise of an error or by offering a percentage as a reward for the recipient’s “trouble.”
He emphasized that the bank accounts of NGOs and charitable bodies are particularly vulnerable and often fall under the scrutiny of anti-graft agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Alieke advised those operating such organizations to be vigilant and carefully monitor all financial transactions passing through their accounts to avoid being unknowingly implicated in illegal activities.
