Pope Francis has passed away at the age of 88, marking the end of a groundbreaking 12-year papacy that began in 2013. The Vatican confirmed his death early Monday morning, following a prolonged hospitalization due to a severe infection that escalated into pneumonia affecting both of his lungs.

In the wake of his passing, Catholics worldwide have entered a period of mourning. The Vatican has declared that the Conclave, during which cardinals will gather to select the next pope, will be postponed for at least 15 days.

Unlike many of his predecessors, Pope Francis will not be buried within the Vatican. Instead, he will be laid to rest at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, situated in the Esquilino district of Rome.

To allow the faithful to pay their respects, his body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica.
