Four officers from the Nigeria Police Force are accused of kidnapping and extorting Segun Okubajo, a Nigerian citizen visiting from abroad.
On May 2, 2025, legal expert Prof. Yemi Oke (SAN) submitted a petition to Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, representing the victim’s father, Mr. Okubajo Kehinde.
The petition alleges that Inspectors Mohammed Yusuf (No. 229655), Ojochenemi Jubrin (No. 227141), Rizama Reuben (No. 318195), and Isokpuwu John (No. 318172) executed a violent and illegal arrest of Segun in Lagos on October 9, 2024.
The complaint states that the officers invaded Segun’s apartment with heavy weapons, disabled the CCTV, seized his phones, and took him away in chains without a formal complaint or warrant. He was reportedly taken to Abuja and held without communication for several days.
The family asserts that Segun’s situation was orchestrated by two alleged informants, Oladipo Ibrahim and Shedrach Luka, who work with corrupt officers to exploit Nigerians living abroad.
“They used Segun’s brief visit to Nigeria as an opportunity to frame him under imaginary allegations, solely for financial gain,” the petition reads, according to Sahara Reporters.
Initially, the officers allegedly demanded ₦1 billion for his release. After tense negotiations, the family says they were forced to raise ₦151.5 million, a sum reportedly secured through loans, business proceeds, and cooperative contributions, to secure his freedom.
“To save his son’s life, Mr. Okubajo and his family borrowed and gathered funds through every possible means,” the petition stated.
Segun has returned abroad, but the threats reportedly continue. The petition states that officers keep sending threatening messages to him and his family, warning them not to seek justice.
In a troubling development, the family claims that some of the extorted money was given to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, a claim they assert is supported by documented proof.
After submitting an initial petition in November 2024, the family reports that no action has been taken, prompting them to file a new petition. They are now demanding:
A full investigation into the incident
Immediate refund of the ₦151.5 million
Disciplinary action against the implicated officers
Protection for Segun and his family
