An American man popularly known as Oyinbo has stirred reactions after lamenting the frustrating process of obtaining a Nigerian passport despite being legally married to a Nigerian woman.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the visibly displeased man appeared alongside his Nigerian wife as they criticized the country’s immigration policy, especially as it relates to foreign spouses of Nigerian women.
According to him, his findings revealed a notable disparity in the process: a foreign woman who marries a Nigerian man can quickly gain Nigerian citizenship and eventually obtain a passport. However, a foreign man married to a Nigerian woman is required to live in Nigeria for at least 15 years before being eligible for the same privilege.
“It’s not right,” he said, pointing out that he is legally married to a Nigerian woman, and they have two children together. However, he continues to face hurdles in becoming recognized as a Nigerian.
His wife also expressed her discontent, suggesting the policy is discriminatory and outdated. The couple called on the Nigerian government to review its immigration laws to reflect fairness and equality, especially in today’s global world where cross-cultural marriages are increasingly common.
The video has since sparked discussions online, with many Nigerians echoing the couple’s sentiments and calling for reform in the nation’s immigration and citizenship laws.
