“Only a Northerner Can Challenge Tinubu in 2027“

  • Dele Momodu, a PDP chieftain, believes that Bola Tinubu’s only challenger in the 2027 presidential election is a Northerner.
  • Dele Momodu countered Bayo Onanuga’s dismissal of opposition coalition talks as “dead on arrival” in an interview on Arise Tv, stating they were worth pursuing.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dele Momodu, has stated that only a candidate from Northern Nigeria can effectively challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking recently during an interview on Arise TV, Momodu dismissed the notion that a southern candidate could defeat Tinubu, calling such ambitions a “waste of time.” His comments came in response to Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who had earlier brushed off opposition coalition talks as “dead on arrival.”

He said, “It will not happen until it has been tried and tested. I have a theory that Tinubu can only be countered this time by a northerner. Any southerner telling you they want to contest against Tinubu is only wasting their time.

“The PDP or the coalition also want power, and the only way they can get it is to go by Isaac Newton’s law of actions and reactions, which are always equal and opposite. So, they will come from the opposite direction; I can guarantee that.

Momodu also addressed claims of a North-South divide within the PDP, explaining that the party has historically maintained a fair balance of leadership between regions. He cited the examples of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former President Goodluck Jonathan to illustrate that Southerners have had significant opportunities within the PDP.

He further questioned the unwritten rule advocating eight-year power rotations between the North and South, asking, “People say it should be eight years North, then eight years South—under which constitution?”
