On April 16, 2025, Nigerian comedian Ime Bishop Umoh, widely known as Okon Lagos, used his Instagram story to share a passionate plea with President Bola Tinubu. In his message, he emphasized the need for Nigeria to capitalize on the ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China, urging the president to position the country as a prime location for luxury brand factories.

Okon Lagos highlighted the economic advantages of attracting luxury brands that are being affected by the trade war. He pointed to Nigeria’s abundant, hardworking population and the availability of affordable labor as compelling reasons for these companies to move their operations to the country.

The comedian identified cities like Aba, Kano, Uyo, and Port Harcourt as potential hubs for manufacturing, showcasing Nigeria’s readiness for industrial development. His message came at a time when global trade relations were being disrupted by the escalating tensions between the US and China, leading to new tariffs and restrictions on several industries, including luxury goods.

In his heartfelt message, Okon Lagos presented the situation as a unique opportunity for Nigeria to attract foreign investments and create jobs. With a population exceeding 200 million, Nigeria has the potential to offer multinational corporations a competitive edge with its cost-effective labor force.

The tone of Okon Lagos’s Instagram post was one of urgency, as he repeatedly urged President Tinubu to act swiftly to take advantage of the shifting global trade landscape. By stressing Nigeria’s status as home to the most affordable labor worldwide, he encouraged multinational companies to consider relocating or expanding their manufacturing operations within the country.

He said:

“President Tinubu, please take advantage of this US-China trade war. Redirect the factories of ‘victimized’ luxury brands to Nigeria. Aba, Kano, Uyo, PH will be ready. We have the cheapest labor in the world and we are a staggering 200plus million hardworking good people! Tinubu oooo. Take advantage!!!”

@talk2snow101:”We don’t have electricity — if we did, we wouldn’t need to beg companies to come. They would naturally gravitate toward us. Instead, they choose countries like India, Vietnam, and others in Southeast Asia over Nigeria. On top of that, there’s no rule of law, widespread insecurity, and numerous other issues — including the inefficiency of our seaports when it comes to clearing and forwarding goods.”

@oluwatayomi:”What feasibility studies justify the locations you mentioned? Only Aba and Kano are relevant to what you are speaking of.”
