On Saturday, April 12, an unidentified man reportedly lost his life while allegedly trying to steal the Agemo deity statue at the Mafowoku roundabout along Folagbade Road in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
Ijebu Ode residents woke up to find that the golden Agemo statue, which had been in place for about 21 years, was missing. They discovered a young man, believed to be the thief, dead next to the statue’s remnants.
A viral video showed a man in a blue shirt lying still near the fallen statue. Hakeem Quadri, a local resident, confirmed the event to Punch.
“The incident is real; it happened right in front of my house. We all heard people making noise, and when I got outside, I saw that the Agemo statue that was commissioned about 21 years ago had been removed while the person suspected to have been behind this sacrilegious act had been struck dead,” he said.
“I learnt that the body of the deceased had been moved to the mortuary.”
