A Nigerian man has shared a deeply distressing account of alleged medical negligence that led to the death of a fellow patient at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
Using the social media handle @LaceVine on platform X (formerly known as Twitter), he recounted that a man in the hospital bed next to his lost his life due to complications following unauthorized feeding. According to the narration, the patient had been restricted from eating orally, yet a nurse reportedly allowed his wife to feed him pap a local corn-based meal.
Shortly after being fed, the patient reportedly began to struggle with breathing. Despite the wife’s repeated calls for assistance, the nurse on duty allegedly dismissed her concerns for around ten minutes. By the time the seriousness of the situation was acknowledged, it was already too late.
“During my stay at LUTH, the man in the bed next to mine died due to suffocation, which I believe was caused by a nurse’s negligence,” @LaceVine wrote. “He wasn’t cleared to eat, but the nurse permitted his wife to give him pap. He started having breathing problems, and when the wife sought help, the nurse initially ignored her.”
He added that after the delayed response, medical staff began scrambling for a suction catheter, which could not be found in time. Tragically, the patient died in front of him.
Further compounding the issue, @LaceVine alleged that when the deceased man’s family arrived, nurses and even the matron on duty quickly changed out of their uniforms and disappeared from the ward.
His emotional post resonated with many users online, prompting widespread criticism and personal stories from others who claim to have experienced similar instances of medical negligence in Nigerian hospitals.
