Professor Jibril Aminu, a prominent Nigerian cardiologist, diplomat, and former legislator, has died at the age of 85 following a lengthy illness.

His multifaceted career encompassed medicine, politics, and international diplomacy. Professor Aminu passed away on Wednesday in Abuja.

He was Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States between 1999 and 2003, a significant period that coincided with Nigeria’s democratic transition.

After his tenure as ambassador, he served as a senator for Adamawa Central from 2003 until 2011. He was respected for his sharp intellect, composed nature, and thorough understanding of policy matters.

Born in 1939, Professor Aminu graduated with a medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965. He went on to earn a doctorate in medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London in 1972, establishing himself as a leading figure in cardiology and medical academia in Nigeria.

Throughout his career, he also held important public offices, including Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Federal Minister of Education, and Federal Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources during the late 1980s.

Professor Aminu leaves behind two wives and nine children.
