A Nigerian citizen has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe President Bola Tinubu’s administration over alleged questionable budget allocations, sparking widespread reactions on social media.

The call for investigation was made through a post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @Ode_Luwa, who highlighted a controversial expenditure of over ₦266 million reportedly allocated for a single streetlight installation. The total sum, according to the post, is part of a ₦393.2 billion budget purportedly meant for 1,477 streetlights.

“Dear @officialEFCC, we urgently need your attention. How can ₦266.25 million be allocated to install just one streetlight pole? This figure is more than enough to build a factory that could produce streetlights and meet the country’s needs sustainably,” the user wrote.

In addition, concerns were raised about another line item in the national budget ₦114.53 billion allegedly earmarked for the construction of 538 boreholes. This translates to around ₦211 million per borehole.

“This is outrageous and incomprehensible. These figures demand urgent scrutiny. Nigerians deserve better. Please investigate,” the post continued.

The allegations quickly gained traction online, with numerous users expressing frustration and demanding accountability. The controversy has reignited public discourse around transparency and the need for diligent oversight of government spending.

See some reactions below:

@0xveektor: “You want them to bite the finger that fingers them?”

@sasmanic: “EFCC is a government lapdog to prosecute the average citizen, as corrupt as our ruling class how many have they prosecuted?”

@BigDEnergy000: “Dem go fess send Battalion 50 go EFCC head office , deal with all these one wella , den enter branch offices , wipe those ones join . Ask Nepa.”

@RichardAvwenake: “The EFCC chairman I heard he’s a Redeem Christian church pastor. I’ve longed given up on religious people. They’re the vilest people you can contend with when they’re dealing with people outside their religious group. Then, you see them condone corruption and be full of hates.”

@unamaugo: “The only thing they will do now is to start investigating the person that leaked this info, they will investigate you, your father, mother sisters, brothers, inlaws, and extended families just to get at the person. Up APC.”

@Osaro_Igbinosa: “EFCC cannot do anything here. Only the legislatures. They can ask the EFCC to verify the figures and come to a conclusion based on their findings but EFCC cannot say the presidency was wrong even if it appears so. That was why Buhari could not prosecute GEJ even when he tried.”
