Deported Nigerian migrant allegedly spends $40K in failed trip to Europe

A Nigerian migrant recently deported from Libya has drawn national attention after reportedly revealing that he spent about $40,000, approximately N60 million, in an unsuccessful attempt to reach Europe through irregular migration routes.

The revelation was shared by former senator Shehu Sani in a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he highlighted the staggering cost and risks involved in illegal migration.

Sani used the story as a cautionary tale, urging Nigerians to either pursue legal migration channels or consider building a life within the country.

“One of the Nigerian migrants deported from Libya revealed that he spent about $40,000 trying to get to Europe. He blew N60m searching for greener pastures,” Sani wrote.

The post quickly went viral, triggering a wave of reactions from Nigerians online, many of whom expressed disbelief and frustration over the man’s decision to spend such a large sum without exploring safer, legal alternatives.

An X user wrote, @AbiolaAdebisi7 commented, “In actual sense you can use the same amount to travel legally to any country in Europe.”

@BuraBem added, “Just N10m here can change life for real real good.”

@NazifMusah remarked, “Very foolish decision. He can do better with such amount of money in Nigeria or any of the West African countries.”

Meanwhile, @shehu_mahdi reacted: “All made possible because of the way democracy has been turned into something similar or worse than jamboree, kalo-kalo, casino, try your luck… an avenue that creates uncertainties, destroys institutions, individuals, communities, opportunities and livelihoods.”
