Chelsea have initiated formal contact with the representatives of Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae, as the club intensifies efforts to strengthen its defensive line ahead of the 2025/26 season.
According to reports from Sky Germany, the South Korean defender is considered a high-priority target by Chelsea, who are seeking to add a commanding presence to their backline under incoming manager Enzo Maresca.
The Blues are expected to face competition from Newcastle United and Juventus, with all three clubs monitoring Kim’s situation closely.
Kim, 27, is reportedly open to a move away from the Bundesliga and views the Premier League as his next preferred destination.
Sources indicate that the defender does not intend to remain under Vincent Kompany’s tenure at Bayern Munich, where playing time has been inconsistent following his high-profile move from Napoli in 2023.
Chelsea, currently pushing for a return to Champions League football, view Kim as a potential leader at the heart of their defence.
Newcastle are also expected to revive interest after failing to land Kim during his move to Bayern.
While the player previously rejected a switch to St. James’ Park, the Tyneside club remains hopeful his stance could shift with a new project under Eddie Howe.
Juventus, meanwhile, are tracking Kim but lack the financial muscle of their Premier League rivals.
Kim Min-jae’s current contract includes a release clause in the region of €50 million, a fee Chelsea are reportedly willing to match in pursuit of defensive stability.
