Bayer Leverkusen set to appoint Erik ten Hag as new head coach

Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Erik ten Hag as their new manager, according to The Athletic.

The Dutch tactician, who has been out of work since parting ways with Manchester United earlier this season, is expected to sign a contract running until 2027, per Sky Germany.

Ten Hag will succeed Xabi Alonso, who led Leverkusen to a historic domestic double this season.

While Cesc Fabregas was also under consideration, he opted to remain with Serie A side Como, leaving the path clear for the former Ajax and United boss.

This appointment marks a crucial chapter for both Leverkusen and Ten Hag.

The club face an imminent squad overhaul with key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Jonathan Tah linked with summer exits.

Ten Hag’s mandate will be to maintain competitiveness amid this transition while building on the foundations Alonso left behind.

For Ten Hag, the Leverkusen job offers a chance at managerial redemption.

His spell at Manchester United ended in disappointment despite initial promise, and he now has the opportunity to restore his reputation at a club with European ambitions.

The formal announcement is expected once final contractual details are ironed out.
