Isaac Fayose, the younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, has stirred controversy online following his outspoken criticism of the recent ₦39 billion renovation of the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC).
In a video shared via Instagram, Fayose condemned the project spearheaded by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu—as an unnecessary expenditure driven by vanity rather than the nation’s interest.
He remarked that the original structure, completed in 1991 under the leadership of General Ibrahim Babangida, cost just ₦240 million to construct from the ground up. Fayose questioned why an upgrade, rather than a complete rebuild, would require such a staggering amount in 2025.
“What message are we sending when ₦39 billion is spent on renovating an old facility, only to rename it after the current president?” he asked. “General Babangida, who initiated the project, never sought to have it bear his name. Why the need for this now?”
Fayose also criticized the timing and priorities of the government, highlighting the ongoing economic challenges, including inflation and insecurity. He argued that such a move reflects a focus on personal legacy over solving pressing national issues.
“Nigerians are grappling with real hardship, yet those in power seem more interested in self-promotion than meaningful governance,” he said.
