Van Hunt, the longtime boyfriend of Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry, revealed that he proposed to her, but she has chosen to put the engagement on hold.
“I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” he told Today.com during their first joint interview on the June 4 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends. “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”
Berry explained that their previous marriages have affected her outlook on marriage and emphasized that they don’t feel the need to get married to validate their love.
“Well, I’ve been married three times. Van has been married once, and so no, we don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t,” Berry said.
Berry’s past marriages include Olivier Martinez, former MLB player David Justice, and Eric Benét. She also shares a son with Martinez and a daughter with her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.
Despite her current stance, Berry still envisions marrying Hunt.
“I think we will get married just because, out of the people I’ve been married to, this is the person I should have married,” she noted. “And I feel like I should, we should get married, but it’s not because we feel like we have to. I think it’s something that we would like to do just because we want that expression.”
When asked about the timing, she simply said, “soon.”
Berry and Hunt officially confirmed their relationship in September 2020.
At that time, a source told PEOPLE that they had been dating for “several months” and that Hunt had met Berry’s two children: daughter Nahla, 17, and son Maceo, 11.
In a September 10 cover story with Marie Claire, Berry opened up about Hunt, sharing: “It was the first time I was madly in love before I had s*x.”
“That has never happened to me, ever,” she added. “Talk about one of those life-changing, beautiful experiences. It was magical, just magical.”
