A Nigerian man, John Gift Tobia, who had been imprisoned since March 2017 without undergoing trial, has finally been released. He was initially taken into custody on March 6, 2017, while his legal case was still pending. Unfortunately, his trial never took place, resulting in him spending more than eight years—specifically 8 years, 4 months, and 10 days—behind bars without a verdict.
In a significant turn of events, a Rivers State high court ordered his unconditional release in June 2025. Upon his freedom, Tobia expressed deep gratitude to the lawyer who championed his cause and shared his plans for the future.

@the_onbeatable: “Nothing hurts me as much as knowing that the second in command of the congenital failure called GMB was a Constitutional Lawyer who couldn’t spearhead any tangible prison reforms in Nigeria…that’s to show how useless the post of a VP is in Nigeria’s political space. It hurts.”
