Veteran Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw has criticized the Nigerian legal system for being unfairly structured against women, stating that both societal attitudes and laws continue to place women at a disadvantage.
Speaking during a recent interview on Arise TV, Henshaw expressed concern over how deeply ingrained gender inequality is within Nigerian culture, emphasizing that many men are raised to view women as inferior.
She said, “God first created man, no doubt, but He brought the woman out from the side, and not from under the man’s feet. He created the woman not to be beneath the man but beside, to reign beside him, to be fruitful, multiple and grow together.“
“But Nigerian men see women as less human. Even our laws, the violence against persons prohibition laws favors men. A man is allowed to chastise his wife. Why?” she asked.
Henshaw’s remarks have sparked widespread debate online, with many echoing her concerns about the need to reform discriminatory laws and promote gender equality in Nigeria.
