The AMVCA Night of Icons, held on April 7, 2025, in Lagos, was a celebration filled with glitz, nostalgia, and laughter as Africa’s cinema legends were honored. This event, a prelude to the much-anticipated 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), brought together the brightest stars in Nollywood.

The main awards ceremony will take place at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos on May 11, 2025, where both industry veterans and emerging talent will be recognized for their contributions to the African entertainment landscape.

One of the evening’s standout moments came from veteran actor Nobert Young and comedian Okey Bakassi, who is also the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha in Imo State. Recently coronated in an extravagant ceremony, Bakassi, dressed in a traditional white kaftan and hat, played the role of a suitor visiting Young’s home to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage.

Their comedic skit had the crowd in stitches, transforming the venue into an impromptu theater where laughter was the main act. The exchange between the two icons served as a delightful reminder of their longstanding influence in Nollywood, and how the simplest forms of storytelling can still bring so much joy.

For many in attendance, this comedic performance was a tribute to the golden age of Nollywood, evoking fond memories of the industry’s early days and how far it has come.

As the countdown to the main AMVCA awards event continues, the excitement builds. Films like Femi Adebayo’s Seven Doors, Lateef Adedimeji’s Lisabi: The Uprising, and Robert Peters’ Skeleton Coast are strong contenders for top honors. In the acting categories, Adedimeji Lateef, Chioma Chukwuka, and Uzor Arukwe, affectionately called “Odogwu Paranran” by fans, are leading the charge.

With more nominations expected to create buzz, all eyes are on the upcoming grand finale of the AMVCA.
