Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has thrown his support behind struggling striker Rasmus Højlund following the Dane’s costly miss in the club’s 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old forward squandered a golden opportunity in the second half, failing to convert Alejandro Garnacho’s inviting cross, a moment that summed up United’s continued woes in front of goal.
Højlund has now scored just once in nearly 30 hours of Premier League football, with his season tally stuck at three goals.
But Amorim refused to single him out.
“It’s a team thing,” he said. “Rasmus is the striker, but we’ve had others miss big chances. The responsibility to score isn’t his alone.”
The pressure on Højlund has intensified following Joshua Zirkzee’s season-ending hamstring injury, which leaves United with limited attacking options.
However, Amorim signaled that the Danish forward will keep his place in the lineup.
“He needs a goal, and he won’t score sitting on the bench. We’ll manage it during games, but he has to work through it.”
Despite links to summer moves for Victor Osimhen, Ollie Watkins and Liam Delap, Amorim emphasized that United’s scoring issues are systemic.
“We play with three forwards and attacking midfielders. It’s not just about one player — everyone has to contribute. If we don’t score, we won’t win games. It’s that simple.”
The defeat to Wolves leaves United’s European qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with the pressure mounting ahead of a critical run-in.
