FAAN Shuts Down Akanu Ibiam Airport Over Damaged Runway –

  • The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.
  • Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, announced this in a statement on Saturday morning.

The Federal Government has announced a temporary shutdown of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State due to urgent runway repairs.

In a statement released on Saturday, Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), revealed that the decision was prompted by a significant rupture discovered on a key section of the runway.

According to Orah, “There is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.

As a result, emergency repair work has been scheduled from April 22 to May 6, 2025, to address the issue.

She further confirmed that the closure complies with Nigerian civil aviation safety standards, ensuring the safety of all airport operations.

“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period,” she said.

The temporary closure is expected to affect both incoming and outgoing flights, with travelers advised to make alternative arrangements during the maintenance period.
