Arsenal knock out Real Madrid to reach Champions League semi-finals

Arsenal sealed a 5-1 aggregate win over Real Madrid to book their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

This follows a 2-1 second-leg victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Mikel Arteta’s side, already leading 3-0 from the first leg in London, produced a composed and disciplined performance to see off the 15-time European champions.

Bukayo Saka had the chance to open the scoring in the first half but saw his Panenka penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Shortly after, Real Madrid were awarded a penalty of their own when Declan Rice was deemed to have fouled Kylian Mbappe, but VAR overturned the decision.

Saka made amends in the second half, latching onto a perfectly-weighted pass from Martin Odegaard to lift the ball over Courtois and extend Arsenal’s lead.

However, William Saliba’s error gifted Vinicius Jr. an equaliser minutes later, offering Madrid a glimmer of hope.

Despite the setback, Arsenal regained control and saw out the tie professionally.

Gabriel Martinelli sealed the win in stoppage time with a breakaway goal, capping a historic night for the North London club.

The result sends Arsenal into their first Champions League semi-final since 2009, where they will face Paris Saint-Germain.
