In a surprising twist, a 28-year-old internet fraudster from Oredo LGA, Edo State, turned himself in to the EFCC office in Benin on April 8, 2025.
The EFCC shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that the man voluntarily approached their Acting Zonal Director, ACEI Effam Okim, and confessed his crimes. His reason? He feared getting caught and said he genuinely wanted to change his ways.
“I reported myself because I wanted to stop and turn a new leaf,” he said.
According to his confession, he had been running romance scams, pretending to be a Chinese medical doctor in a war-torn country. He used translation apps to communicate in Chinese and lured foreigners into fake online relationships.
As the news spread, many Nigerians took to social media to react, with some praising his decision and others raising questions about what comes next for him.
