A professional chauffeur who drove the late Afrobeat star Mohbad to a performance on the day of his passing has shared his account of the troubling events that unfolded. Speaking during the ongoing coroner’s inquest, the driver revealed unsettling moments between Mohbad, his close friend Primeboy, and his wife, Wunmi.

The driver, a veteran in the car-hiring business with over two decades of experience, said he picked up Mohbad from his residence that day.

“On the day of the show, I went to Mohbad’s house. He came out with his wife and son looking happy and was playing with his child.”

However, he said the mood shifted drastically once the trip began. Mohbad and Wunmi began to argue in Yoruba, a language the driver said he didn’t fully understand, though he caught Wunmi saying in pidgin, “You dey disgrace me and your pikin.” She even threatened to abandon the trip until others in the vehicle calmed her down.

After the performance, soldiers had to escort Mohbad back to the car due to rowdy fans demanding money. According to the driver, the tension boiled over when Mohbad attempted to confront the crowd and then got into a physical altercation with Primeboy in the car.

“He told Primeboy to get down and began punching him. Primeboy kept saying, ‘Mohbad I can’t fight you, I can’t touch you,’ but Mohbad didn’t stop. He kept hitting him. It was when Primeboy dodged one blow that Mohbad’s hand struck the Prado’s glass, and he injured himself,” the driver explained.

“Mohbad and Wunmi started arguing again. She insulted him, calling him names like ‘oloriburuku’ and ‘oloshi.’ She even claimed she once helped him borrow N200,000 in 2020 which he gave to his mother. Mohbad replied that he would pay her back. Then she grabbed him by the shirt collar tightly until his necklace broke,” the driver stated.

He condemned her behavior, saying, , “If Wunmi was my wife, I would have beaten her blue-black for the nonsense she did in that car.”

The driver also addressed rumors circulating online, denying claims that Mohbad attempted to harm his child. “That never happened. It’s not true.” he said.

Later that night, he said some of Mohbad’s crew asked him to take them to a pharmacy around 3 a.m., but he declined due to lack of fuel. The next morning, he tried to alert those in the house, and it was Wunmi who finally responded around 11 a.m., saying she thought he had left. She also agreed to cover the cost of the damage to his car.

To his shock, the next day he received a call summoning him to the police station. It was then a friend broke the devastating news—Mohbad had died.

“I was shocked. It didn’t make sense. How could that happen so fast?” he said, still in disbelief.

His testimony adds further complexity to the tragic circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death, fueling continued public scrutiny and calls for justice.
