Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented a N10 million cash reward to Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the top graduate of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic year. Nwosu, who earned a degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Science, graduated with an outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.93.
The award was announced during the 28th Convocation Ceremony of LASU, which took place at the Buba Marwa Auditorium in Ojo on Thursday. The event also saw the conferment of honorary degrees and distinguished professorships to notable Nigerians, including Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and former Lagos State Deputy Governor Otunba Olufemi Pedro. Marwa received a Doctor of Humane Letters (Infrastructure, Security, and National Development), while Pedro was awarded a Doctor of Business (Banking, Entrepreneurship, and National Development), both Honoris Causa.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, reaffirmed the state’s dedication to education as a key driver of progress. He emphasized the need for society to place as much value on academic excellence as it does on achievements in other sectors such as entertainment and sports.
“Education is the foundation of our society, crucial in addressing societal challenges and fostering human development,” he stated, further stressing the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure and the welfare of students and staff in tertiary institutions. Sanwo-Olu outlined his administration’s focus on education within its THEMES+ development framework, which includes substantial investment in the expansion of university facilities.
The governor also highlighted the “Job Initiative Lagos” program, aimed at improving the employability of final-year students from state-owned universities.
LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, commended the state government for its continued support and revealed that the university had successfully accredited 43 out of its 44 academic programs in the most recent accreditation process. She also announced the expansion of postgraduate opportunities through the Africa Centre of Excellence for Innovative and Transformative STEM Education, which now includes international students.
In his address, the Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Gbolahan Elias (SAN), urged the graduates to uphold the university’s values and continue their innovation and dedication in their future endeavors, as they not only represent themselves but also their families, the university, and the state.
A total of 11,917 students graduated during the ceremony, including diploma holders, first-degree graduates, postgraduates, and doctoral recipients.
