Former presidential aide and social commentator, Reno Omokri, has stirred up a storm online with his bold assertion that a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is far better than a PhD in disciplines such as Sociology, Philosophy, or other art-related courses.
Omokri, known for his controversial remarks on social media, expressed this view in a post on Monday, April 7, 2025, arguing that STEM degrees are more valuable in today’s job market.

He highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology, which are transforming the future of work.
Drawing a comparison to the Olympics, Omokri explained that just as a country with a single gold medal ranks higher than nations with hundreds of silver and bronze medals, a STEM degree outweighs multiple degrees in non-technical fields that may no longer align with the demands of the modern economy.
He urged students to be more strategic about their choice of study, advising against making decisions based on emotion.
He stated:
“All degrees are not equal. I repeat, all degrees are not equal. A bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is by far better than a PhD in political science, sociology, theatre arts, philosophy, religious studies, conflict resolution, library science, public administration, classics, mass communication, anthropology, and more. Unless you are already a diplomat, a wealthy politician, or a bored billionaire’s child, studying international relations will only lead to frustration, especially in the age of AI. It’s like competing at the Olympics. A country with one gold medal ranks higher than a nation with hundreds of bronze and silver medals but no gold. Do not be emotional about what you study. Be intentional. If you must spend four to five years of your life eating a frog, make sure it’s a big one!”
