The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced his intention to reinstate the deportation of all undocumented immigrants upon taking office on January 20, 2025.
This declaration was made during an interview broadcast on NBC News’ “Meet the Press with Kristen Welker” on Sunday.
Trump elaborated on his strategy for a comprehensive crackdown on illegal immigration, which he plans to designate as a national emergency.
According to estimates from the Department of Homeland Security, as of January 2022, there were over 11 million individuals residing in the U.S. without legal status, a number that is likely to have increased since then.
Additionally, Trump indicated plans to impose tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada.
He reiterated his commitment to expelling all unauthorized immigrants, asserting: “I think you have to do it. It’s a very tough thing to do. You know, you have rules, regulations, laws.”
Nevertheless, the incoming president expressed his willingness to negotiate protections for “Dreamers,” individuals who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.
During his previous term, Trump sought to dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which offers deportation relief to this demographic, but his efforts were thwarted by the Supreme Court.
He also intended to issue an executive order to terminate birthright citizenship on his first day in office.
