Dan Ashworth departs Old Trafford after just five months as Man United sporting director

Dan Ashworth’s time as Manchester United’s sporting director has come to an abrupt end after only five months in the role.

The decision, reached mutually with chief executive Omar Berrada, followed United’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Ashworth, who joined United on July 1 after leaving Newcastle United, was initially seen as a key figure in the club’s rebuilding process.

His role included overseeing football performance, recruitment and operations.

However, under the new structure led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sir Dave Brailsford, tensions reportedly emerged, prompting his early departure.

Recall Ashworth was instrumental in a busy summer transfer window, which saw United spend around £200 million on players like Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, and Manuel Ugarte.

Despite this, United’s recent struggles on and off the pitch made his position untenable.
